Getting the Best Violin Lessons for You

There are many different ways to learn how to play violin. Not all of them are right for everyone, and some aren’t right for everyone all the time. In this article we’ll discuss when you should be taking private lessons and when it might not be in your best interest.

Private violin instruction is beneficial to anyone who needs constant support, either in technique or in motivation. Instructors will give you a push in the right direction, but they can’t do the work for you. Having them there allows them to correct your technique or assist with your problem areas. This way, you don’t get frustrated and give up.

If you have any measure of pride, having someone invested in your progress will make a huge difference. You have to make progress from lesson to lesson or you will not only be embarrassed but wasting your money.

To minimize the waste of money you may want to cycle through instructors. When you’re new, you don’t need to pay a lot for advanced instruction. Beginner violin lessons are easy and cheap to find because most any violinist can teach them to you. You can move up as you need.

You may also wish to seek out a violin teacher if you’ve reached a playing plateau. Despite all your practice, sometimes you won’t see any progress for a while. A good teacher can help you to start seeing progress again. Being around an excellent player, or at least one you look up to, can make you want to be better and you will absorb their mindset.

Online violin lessons are a good alternative if you find you don’t need a private instructor. They do very well for all students if you’ve found a quality course (these are quite cheap).

If you’ve decided you need a teacher for private violin instruction, next on the list is finding one. There are plenty of violin teachers, but finding one that is right for you can take a bit more effort. Online you can sometimes find directories of teachers or find them on Craigslist.

You can also contact local music schools or the music department of nearby universities if they offer private instruction or if they can refer you to someone who does. Music stores also work for this. Some even have back rooms for private lessons.

Violin teachers find students mostly through referrals, so you’ll find them in the same manner. If you know good violinists, ask them who they learn from. You can look for violinists at local recitals and community concerts. Sometimes school concerts work well.

Before you choose a teacher, be sure to ask them the major questions. These include asking about their price, references, student achievements, general student ages, personal violin achievements, and style. Don’t commit to the relationship too early. Start the lessons on a trial basis. Go the trial road even if the teacher seems perfect as you may not learn very well with their methods of teaching.
