How To Choose An Air Conditioner Filter

January 17, 2012 | Author: | Posted in Home & Family

The primary function of the air filter of your air conditioner is cleansing. It would keep particles, ozone emissions, and other types of pollution away from the machine’s cooling coil, which means that the air inside the air will be clean.

You would get several varieties of air filters for your air conditioner – like the HEPA, standard, pleated, electrostatic and electronic filters. The most common among these are the standard, pleated and the electrostatic filters. These are usually installed in walls, ceilings, furnaces, or in the air conditioning machine.

Standard filters are made from spun fibreglass and cardboard frames, and are capable of filtering 10% of dust particles. These filters need to be replaced every month. Pleated filters are more efficient than the standard filters. Their filter material is designed like a paper fan, and as they cover a larger area, they can remove about thirty five to forty percent of the air particles. They should be replaced every 2-4 months. They are more expensive then the standard filters, with prices ranging from $5-$20.

Electrostatic filters catch dust through electric charges. The charge is either built-in or generated when air passes through the layers of the filter. They may cost $20 to $100. It would be sufficient for you to change the filter only once a year.

Electronic air filters and electrostatic filters have almost the same mechanism. This is the preferred filter for people with allergies. Electronic filters won’t slow down the airflow inside the machine. Just choose a filter that you need, and make sure to have the conditioner coils checked and cleaned monthly.

Changing the filters regularly will make your air conditioner more efficient. This is really important, because choked up or unclean filters would obstruct the proper flow of air. This would in turn abate the coils’ capacity of absorbing heat and naturally, your air conditioner would simply stop functioning smoothly.
